What is pass interference?

Pass interference is a penalty in American and Canadian football that occurs when a defensive player interferes with an eligible receiver's ability to make a catch. This can happen by making contact with the receiver before the ball arrives, hindering the receiver's ability to catch the ball, or preventing the receiver from having a fair chance to make a play on the ball.

In the NFL, pass interference can be called both on the offense and defense, but it is most commonly called on the defense. If pass interference is called, the penalized team will be penalized either 10 yards from the previous spot or awarded an automatic first down, depending on the circumstances of the play.

Pass interference is a subjective call that is often controversial, as it can be difficult for officials to determine whether contact was incidental or intentional. However, it is an important rule in place to ensure fair play and protect the integrity of the game.
